This book covers the four locomotives from Nevada's Virginia & Truckee Railroad, #11, #18, #22, and #25. These were purchased by Hollywood studios between 1937 and 1947. They were used in more than 150 motion pictures and television shows between 1937 and the present. Three of them are now fully restored to their historic appearances at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City. The fourth is still a prized possession of Old Tucson Studios in Arizona. Also included in the book are the movies that were made on the V&T, circa 1948-1950, with locomotives #5, #26, and #27. This volume includes a list of motion pictures that used these trains and 117 photographs (with 15 in color) that show various trains and film companies in action.

Motion picture directors, producers, and writers have long recognized the multitude of possibilities for comedy, drama, and suspense that railroads offer. Chases, races, robberies, wrecks, derring-do, and intrigue on and around trains provided the kind of excitement that kept audiences coming back for more.

In a quest to find interesting locations, Hollywood filmmakers "discovered" various mainline, short line, and narrow gauge railroads. Some of these lines were used in movies and television shows again and again, achieving their own special place in film history. Hollywood's Railroads tells their stories.

In Volume Three: Narrow Gauge Country, we travel to southwestern Colorado and northern New Mexico, with its spectacular mountain and desert scenery. Quaint narrow gauge trains have been part of this dramatic landscape since the 1880s, first serving mining and ranching interests, then tourists.

For more than seventy-five years, filmmakers have used the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad and its modern-day successors, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, in dozens of motion pictures that featured many of the industry's biggest stars.

This volume takes you behind the scenes, from early films in the 1930s, through epics made on the Silverton Branch in the 1950s - when Durango nicknamed itself "Hollywood of the Rockies" - to major movies made on the Cumbres & Toltec in recent decades.

Notes:

This book tells the story of the central California short line that became Hollywood's most popular destination to shoot railroad scenes. The line was first "discovered" by silent filmmakers in 1919. During the past century, it has been used in more than 300 films, including High Noon, Back to the Future III and Clint Eastwood's Academy Award winning Best Picture, Unforgiven. Generations of television viewers saw it on The Lone Ranger, Tales of Wells Fargo, Rawhide, The Big Valley, The Wild Wild West, Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and Little House on the Prairie. This volume has a list of films and 140 photographs (with 25 in color) that show various trains and film companies in action.
