Alco RS-1

Reserve by: now
Expected by: 1st Quarter 2013

The RS-1 was introduced by ALCO in March of 1941 with the delivery of the first of two units to the Rock Island. Pulpwood Flat Car

Reserve by: now
Expected by: 4th Quarter 2012

Pulpwood is not a specific type of wood, but actually tree limbs that are cut to a specified length, then turned into wood pulp and used in the paper industry. Early paper making had the trees near the paper plant. As timber resources were diminished, the need for transporting pulpwood began to rise. Railroads were seen as an efficient method of transporting pulpwood. Pulpwood in the Southeast and Northeast is generally cut into four-foot or less lengths and loaded onto "V-deck" bulkhead flat cars. The Atlas pulpwood flat is a reproduction of an early 1950s General Steel Castings "V-deck" design. Available in 2-rail as well as 3-rail, these ready-to-run freight cars have state-of-the-art detailing and construction. This Atlas O model branches out to reach the height of O model railroad accuracy. A separate and simulated detailed pulpwood load is also included.

AAR 70 Ton 3-Bay Open Hopper

This familiar hopper was an industry standard on many railroads since the 1930s. It was adopted by the AAR as a recommended design, but fell out of favor by the mid-1950s. While offering greater capacity over cars with conventional flat sides, the original open hoppers created corrosive interaction between acidic coal and the car's joints, leading to costly rebuilding programs.

1923 ARA (X-29) 40' Steel Box Car

In 1923, the ARA (American Railway Association) proposed a standard design all-steel box car for the railroads. While the design was certainly a good one, the car never became a recommended practice due to questions of the selected inside width. Nonetheless, quite a few railroads opted for the design and rostered sizeable fleets. The largest group of cars, by far, was class X-29 of the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Streamlined 10-6 Sleeping Cars

Atlas O is going into the passenger business BIG TIME. As its first introductions, Atlas O is proud to introduce cars from the famous California Zephyr. Displaying one of the most famous names of the "Streamliner Era", these cars epitomized the zenith of passenger car construction in pre-jet America. Originally operated by CB&Q, D&RGW and WP, The California Zephyr was considered to be the pinnacle of design, comfort and luxury of the late 1940s. Its inaugural run on March 12, 1949, attended by politicians, hollywood stars, and corporate executives, spared no expense. The Zephyr presented each inaugural female passenger with an exotic corsage of silver and orange orchids flown in from Hilo, Hawaii. Marketed to families as "a vacation unto itself", luxury is obviously an important part of the Zephyr's lasting allure. Each car was adorned with intricate oil paintings, carved linoleum and etched glass. Radio service was also provided throughout the train with an allowance of thirty-four different broadcasting stations. Various lighting elements were meticulously designed for optimal ambiance and comfort; fluorescent lighting was provided in all common spaces and incandescent reading lamps were installed in each roomette and over each seat, as well as in restrooms, vestibules and passageways. The dome lighting's intensity was specifically designed to decrease as you ascended -- not only to create an air of elegance -- but also to allow glare-free night viewing by the passengers. Elevating the notion of travel luxury were the famed "Zephyrettes", specially selected train hostesses that filled mostly any role to help make the trip both memorable and relaxing; from baby-sitting to organizing social activities. Throughout its twenty-one year run, the California Zephyr ran with cars of mixed ownership split between the three railroads. This mixed consist depended mostly on what cars were available at the terminals rather than the railroad it was operating on at the time. Its final run was completed on March 22, 1970. Today, the stainless steel cars of the original California Zephyr are extremely popular with private collectors and several operate in charter service through Amtrak, including two cars offered in this run: "The Silver Lariat" and "The Silver Rapids."

O-27 Tank Car

Compatible with all traditionally-sized 3-Rail O/O-27 Trains, Atlas' Industrial Rail Tank Car is of a typical design used to serve many different industries from the 1940s through the 1980s. This style of tank car could be seen on railroads throughout North America, transporting both hazardous and non-hazardous materials. Many wore colorful paint schemes advertising the various companies who owned or leased them.

40' GATX Airslide Hopper

The airslide covered hopper was introduced by General American Transportation Corporation (GATX) in 1953. Approx. 5000 of the 2600 cu. ft. cars were built between that year and 1969. The airslide is primarily designed for the bulk shipment of dry, granular or powdered commodities. The design of that car is such that it can be loaded and unloaded quickly and with little spillage through the use of air pressure. The most common commodities carried include: flour, sugar, starch, plastic pellets, cement, powdered chemicals and carbon black.

PRR H21a Hopper

One of the most familiar Pennsylvania Railroad freight cars of all time, the H21a was also the largest single hopper car class on the PRR. With over 39,000 cars built, the H21a had an amazing history of service and longevity with several hundred cars lasting well into the Penn Central era. During the 1940s and early 1950s, these hoppers were leased to both the Norfolk & Western and Virginian railroads. Atlas O's version is realistically duplicated from designs based upon actual historical documentation of the lease agreements.

Trainman® Bay Window Caboose

Along with the Extended-Vision body style, the Bay Window Caboose became one of the preferred designs for cabooses built in the 1950s and beyond. It offered improved visibility for better views of the train while in motion as well as modern amenities for the crew. This TRAINMAN model is based upon features of the Southern Pacific C-30-6 bay window cabooses of 1951, but at the same time is representative of the thousands of such cars used on American railroads.

50' PS-1 Box Cars

Atlas O's 50' PS-1 Box Car represents the classic American railroads of the 1950s and 1960s, where fifty-foot box cars became the standard. Many major railroads owned Pullman Standard's box cars, but details were specific to the railroad. One such detail that was different was the door style used on the car.

Trainman® PS-4750 Covered Hoppers

Pullman Standard's 4750 cubic foot covered hopper was one of the most successful freight car designs in that company's history. Over 54,000 of these cars were produced during the latter part of the 1970s and early 1980s. It was the premier grain hauler of the era and is still in use. Found throughout the country on virtually all of the class 1 rail lines, it is also one of the most leased cars through the Transport Leasing Division of Pullman. The cars were painted a virtual rainbow of colors.

Trinity Covered Hoppers

In 1995, Trinity Industries introduced a new center-sill design covered hopper car designed primarily for grain transport. The new design was visually quite different - this one featured curved sides versus previously familiar rib-sided design adopted from Pullman-Standard. The new 5161 cubic-foot capacity design along with the recently introduced allowable 286,000 lbs GRL (Gross Rail Loading) brought a new standard to the industry (Trinity's competition were ACF and Thrall). Initial deliveries went to Trinity's leasing component and to ADM Transportation, a large private company heavily invested in grain products. Within months, deliveries to the other "grain" companies began rolling down the steel rails. Eventually, the traditional grain railroads jumped in on the game with BNSF leading the pack. The 5161 grain variants have long trough hatches usually broken into sections for easy opening. The outlets on grain cars are usually gravity-only and vary by manufacturer. Fixed shaker brackets can be found on the hopper sides. However, not all the 5161s are for grain-products. BNSF has a good-sized fleet of cars used for sugar transport that feature round-hatches in elongated hatches, gravity-pneumatic gates and have special interior lining. Other variations include round-hatch only cars for chemical transport and cars being used for the potash and fertilizer industry. Currently, the design is still in production with over 27,000 units being delivered and this model stands as being the most popular grain car in today's market.

70-ton Covered Hoppers

Introduced by American Car & Foundry (ACF®) in the mid-1930s, the 70 Ton Covered Hopper, with 1958 cu.ft. capacity, offered an improved design for the transport of dry bulk goods. The car proved to be widely popular and could be found on most major rail lines. Thousands of cars were built, not only by ACF®, but by the other major builders as well. The cars led very productive service lives until the 1970s, and some may still be found in maintenance-of-way on-line service.

Berwick 60' Hy-cube Box Car

Berwick Forge & Fabricating built over 23,000 freight cars in its nearly 20 years of existence in Berwick, Pennsylvania. Their designs were very successful and most of the cars are still in service today. While Berwick built virtually all modern types of freight cars, they are perhaps best known for their 50' and 60' box cars. This Atlas O model replicates the interesting series of 60' high-capacity cars that were built by Berwick in the late 70s. These Hy-Cube cars feature centered double plug-doors and a waffle pattern on the car sides.

Trainman® 40' Sliding Door Box Car

Based on a popular box car produced by ACF (American Car & Foundry) from the late 1940's through the mid-1950's, this model is representative of the thousands of similar cars that ran on virtually all North American rail lines. The 40' Sliding Door Box Car, considered an American tradition, was originally built to transport goods in the harsh weather found in various parts of the United States. This car features such accurate details as the diagonal roof panels and improved dreadnaught ends characteristic of the prototype.

The highly successful PS-2 covered hopper was designed by Pullman Standard in the 1940s. This virtually all-welded 2-bay hopper had a 2003 cubic foot capacity and was well suited for a variety of transportable bulk commodities such as sugar, wheat and oat flour and calcium carbide. However by 1952, the demand for a larger covered hopper was quite evident. Pullman Standard quickly responded with new 3-bay car. This new hopper was just what the railroads and lessees wanted and it soon superseded the 2-bay car in production.

Based upon another popular prototype car by ACF (American Car & Foundry), this ATLAS O TRAINMAN® model captures the look and function of one of the most utilitarian of all freight cars. Often called, "the work horse of the steel industry", the gondola is basically a flat car with sides, allowing more, and different types, of loads to be transported. The gondola dates to about 1830 and was first used on early railways and tramways to move coal. Ours features crisp detailing, including a see-through brake wheel platform and accurate painting and printing. The ATLAS O TRAINMAN® gondola will find as many uses on a model railroad as the prototype did on the great rail lines of America!

This 53' boxcar was manufactured in the 1960s and '70s by Evans Company and was used primarily to haul produce, wood and paper products, and canned goods. The prototype is an insulated RBL featuring a 16 foot opening and double plug doors. This special 2-Pack of Commemorative Evans 53' Double Plug Door Box Cars is the final release of specially painted Wisconsin & Southern freight cars. Dedicated to the day we will never forget - September 11, 2001 - these cars are an accurate and lasting tribute to one of the bleakest moments in recent United States history. The prototype cars continue to ply the rails in everyday service, offering a grim reminder of that day 10 years ago. A donation to a 9/11 charity fund will be made for each 2-pack sold. Two road numbers available per road name, except for the two pack, which has one road number per road name.

Atlas GP-7

Introduced in 1949, the Electro-Motive 1500hp GP-7 combined the machinery of the F7 with a hood-type carbody that offered high visibility and easy engine access. The GP-7 was used in pulling every conceivable type of train and was sometimes substituted for part of a set of cab units. The only truly correct GP-7 on the market! This Trainman® model is based upon the general service flat cars that were built by the Canadian Pacific circa 1953. The cars were constructed from riveted steel and feature fishbelly side sills. The decks are in an interesting combination of wood and steel that has been accurately duplicated on our model. A realistic pipe load with deck tie-downs is included with the cars.

SD40

Introduced in 1966, the EMD SD40 and its family of later variations, became the best-selling diesel of all time. The SD40 and the other 1966 line-up of EMD locos featured the new 645-series prime mover, the first major engine change since 1939. The success of this diesel engine and the 3000 h.p. rating have made the SD40 family of locos the standard of American railroads. Now, over three decades since their introduction, many of these locos are still in regular mainline operation.

Atlas O 8,000-gallon Tank Cars

The ACF® 8,000 Gallon Type 27 Tank Car was one of the most popular standard design riveted tank cars of the first half of the twentieth century. ACF® built more than 1,800 of these cars for a wide variety of customers in the petroleum, chemical, and food industries. Virtually every bulk liquid or gas of the era was shipped in these cars (and its similar 10,000 gallon brother). Typical products included petroleum, acids, alcohol, propane, ammonia, molasses and vegetable oil.
