USRA Steel Rebuilt Box Car

By the beginning of WWII, the majority of the classic USRA double-sheathed box cars and their clones were rebuilt with steel sides. More rebuilds followed in the late 1940s and early 1950s. By late 1948, close 14,000 of the original 24,500 USRA double-sheathed cars had been rebuilt with quite a degree of variation including the end, door and underframe. These steel side rebuilds were far more popular than their single-sheathed counterparts and make a great addition to the Atlas HO scale product line.

33,000 Gallon Tank Car

The ACF® "whale body" 33,156 gallon tank car was designed to haul liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and anhydrous ammonia. Originally built in the early 1960s, you can still find these cars in service today. *Alternative History; What if... after testing the "Rail Whale" prototypes (500000 and 500001) in 1965, the PRR placed an order for conventional pressurised tank cars from ACF.

Trainman® 1937 AAR 40' Box Car Kit

The 1937 AAR Box Car is widely recognized as the first standard freight car design to be voluntarily adopted by the majority of railroads throughout the United States. Although previous USRA designs also achieved widespread distribution, their success was mostly due to government control rather than popular acceptance. The 1937 AAR Box Car also had many features that became standard on boxcars for years to come, including dreadnaught ends, straight panel roof and an inside length of 40' 6". They had an interior height of 10' with a 3700 cubic foot capacity. With only a few variations built, this design helped the industry realize the economic advantages of freight equipment standardization; a concept that continues into the modern era.

Trainman® 85' Trash Flat Car

An increased use of shipping containers during the 1970s led to new designs of railway cars for carrying them. The standard cars used at the time were full plate-deck 85' and 89' flat cars with 70-ton trucks. However, each 20-foot international shipping container of the era could gross some 25 tons - thus a flat car carrying four at maximum gross would be 100 tons. In an effort to address this weight issue, new flat cars with open decks and 100 ton trucks were placed in service and eventually used for a new railroad commodity - trash containers. Atlas' new 85' model follows the open-deck flat design commonly seen in trash trains around the United States. The model also follows the prototypes used in international container service.

DASH 8-40C/CW Locomotives

First built for Union Pacific in the late 1980's by General Electric, the DASH 8-40C diesel locomotives were identified by an enlarged exhaust stack and the mounting of the dynamic brake grids in a square-like unit behind the cab, which housed an enlarged equipment blower fan. These six-axle, 4,000 hp engines are still in service today in North America. The 4,000hp Dash 8-40CW was produced by General Electric between 1989 and 1993 as a follow-up to the successful Dash 8-40C locomotive. The most distinguishing feature of this model was the introduction of GE's version of the wide-nose "North American Safety Cab." This style of cab would become a common sight on railroads across the country. Four major railroads purchased the Dash 8-40CW in fairly large quantities, including Conrail, CSX, Santa Fe and Union Pacific. Most of these units are still in regular mainline and heavy-haul freight service today. Due to various mergers, they can also be seen operating for new owners Norfolk Southern and BNSF. The Atlas Master™ Series Gold versions of these locomotives are able to use all of the QSI® Quantum System™ sound features on DC layouts with use of the Atlas Quantum Engineer™.

42' Coil Steel Cars

The increased volume of coiled steel transportation gave rise to a new purpose-built freight car. Previously rolls of coiled-steel had generally traveled in specially equipped gondola cars. In the 1960's a lighter type of car emerged specifically for hauling coils of steel in an integral trough. The car type gained popularity and eventually over 17,000 cars were built. Atlas' model replicates a 42' design with a distinctive fishbelly side sill.

50' Single Door Box Car

At the end of World War II, railroads ordered large numbers of 50' AAR boxcars with a standard design that was first widely used in the late 1940s. This design was based on the original 1937 AAR design but was modified in the post-war era to include: improved dreadnaught end and diagonal panel roofs with standard or overhanging design. These 50' boxcars were a common sight on American railroads well into the 1970s and 1980s.

40' Postwar Box Car w/6' Door

Spurred by the postwar business boom and in an effort to replace worn out equipment, North American railroads built large numbers of 40' box cars to the AAR standard designs beginning in 1945. Prototypes were built with different combinations of roof styles, ends and doors. Our tooling includes many of the more common options for these details.

Thrall 2743 Gondola

The Thrall Car 2743 cubic foot gondola was introduced in 1995. This new 52' 6" interior length design was in response to the newly allowed increase in Gross Rail Loading (GRL) to 286,000 lbs (up from 263,000 lbs). This allowed an increase of the inside height from the previously standard 5'0" to a new standard of 5'6", giving it a 2,743 cubic foot capacity. Thrall produced over 6,700 of these from 1995 to 1999. The design resumed production under Trinityrail in 2005.

1932 ARA Box Car

A goal of the American Railway Association (ARA) in the early 1920s was to produce an all-steel box car that could be recognized as a standard by the member railroads. Although the original design presented in 1923 produced in excess of 60,000 cars, it wasn't until a new design was presented in 1932 that the member railroads gave their approval. After extensively testing five prototypes in 1933, over 14,500 cars were produced for twenty-three railroads throughout the following decade. This design soon evolved into the 1937, Modified 1937, and Postwar AAR box cars. Although not the most popular design produced, numerically speaking, the 1932 ARA Standard box car is considered one of the most important designs in railroad history.

RS-11

The first RS-11s were produced by Alco in early 1956. This locomotive, classified by Alco as model DL-701, was their replacement for the very popular RS-3 road-switcher. Featuring a V-12, 1,800hp 251B diesel engine, the RS-11 was Alco's answer to EMD's very successful GP9. The turbocharged RS-11 accelerated faster, had a higher tractive effort rating and typically used less fuel than the competition. It was also quite versatile and could be found in heavy haul freight as well as passenger service. The largest owner of RS-11's was Norfolk & Western which purchased a total of 99 units (an additional 35 were added to the fleet after the merger with Nickel Plate). Other major purchasers included Northern Pacific, Pennsylvania and Southern Pacific, all of whom placed repeat orders. With approximately 426 units built for the US and Mexico over 8 years of production, the RS-11 was successful for Alco in that it provided ongoing competition for EMD's popular road-switchers. A few examples of this model are still in service today and can be found working for various shortlines in the US.

1937 AAR 40' Box Car Kit

50' Plug Door Box Car

Sliding door box cars were basically the build standard prior to World War II. It wasn't until after the war that many railroads experimented with the use of plug doors, similar to those used on many refrigerator cars, on their box cars. The tight seal of the plug door, accompanied by insulated sides, ends, floor and roof panels, allowed these new box cars to carry perishables where temperature control was important but refrigeration wasn't necessary. This design, classified by the AAR (Association of American Railways) as "RB" or "RBL", meaning bunkerless refrigerator cars, gained popularity in the mid 1950s and the following decade saw over 3,000 similar cars built for a number of different owners.

RS-32/36

Designated as a "DL721" by ALCo, the 2,000hp RS-32 was intended to compete with EMD's GP20 and GE's U25B locomotives. Only 35 units were produced, with 25 units ordered by New York Central in 1961 and 10 units by Southern Pacific in 1962. New York Central's RS-32s were commonly seen in both road and local freight assignments. Southern Pacific's units were initially used in road service, but later settled into local freight service in San Francisco's "commute" territory. Here they were sometimes called upon to rescue stalled commuter trains. They later migrated across the system, ending their SP careers in Texas during the late 1970s with various other ALCo models. Designated as a "DL701" by ALCo, the 1,800hp RS-36 was only slightly more successful than the RS32, with a total of 40 units produced between 1961 and 1963. Interestingly the DL701 designation was also used for the RS-11 locomotive, and this has been the cause of some confusion when tallying fleet rosters. The largest purchaser of RS36s was Delaware & Hudson with a total of 12 units. These units served the D&H well, operating in road and local freight service through the 1980s. A few units even lasted into the 1990s holding yard and local assignments, serving their original owner for nearly 30 years. Norfolk & Western eventually amassed a larger fleet than the D&H, with the acquisition of Nickel Plate's 11 units, giving N&W a total fleet of 17 units (some with high short hoods). Other original owners included Tennessee Central, Apache, Atlantic & Danville and Chicago & North Western (single unit order). Given their very low production numbers, it is interesting to note that a handful of RS-32 and RS-36 locomotives can still be found in service today on a few US shortlines and tourist railroads.

C420 Locomotives

This release of Atlas' C420 represents both low and high short hood phase 1 models. All low nose models on this run represent locomotives originally owned by Lehigh Valley. The LV C420s were transferred to Delaware & Hudson when Conrail was formed in 1976. LV 405 was later sold by the D&H but eventually returned to home territory in Scranton, PA and is now operating as Delaware-Lackawanna 405 in their attractive gray/white "corporate" scheme. All high short hood models on this run represent locomotives originally owned by the Long Island RR. The Long Island models are decorated in the later "MTA" blue & yellow paint scheme. When their lease expired in 1976, LI's phase 1 C420s were initially sent to storage on the Delaware & Hudson and Morristown & Erie railroads. Some were leased by the D&H for a short time in 1977 and operated in patched LI blue & yellow paint. All were eventually sold to various railroads throughout North America. Canada is represented on this run by Roberval & Saguenay, a Quebec shortline. Mexico is represented by two Nacionales de Mexico C420s. These locomotives are notable as being some of the few N de M diesels set up to run long hood forward and their paint scheme reflects this. Two short lines round out the set with Buffalo Southern 2010 being a former Susquehanna unit that is still in service today. The short-lived Vermont Northern operated a line that eventually became the Lamoille Valley Railroad.

Note: Due to the higher starting voltage required to operate the sound system, it is not possible to MU a non-sound-equipped loco in DC (analog) mode.
